Guava

Guava in skincare: what the evidence suggests

Guava (Psidium guajava) is a tropical fruit valued for naturally occurring vitamin C, polyphenols and other antioxidant compounds. In skincare, however, “guava extract” can refer to very different materials made from the fruit, leaves or other parts of the plant, so their chemistry and performance should not be treated as interchangeable.

For guava extract within a current AEMLIE formula, discover Sensitive Revitalising Face Serum. For more on the botanical itself, read our guide to guava extract and sensitive skin.

Why guava is interesting to cosmetic formulators

Antioxidants help researchers study how botanical extracts respond to oxidative stress. In one laboratory study using human dermal fibroblasts, a crude guava fruit extract reduced several markers of oxidative damage under controlled test conditions. That is promising ingredient research, but it is not the same as proving that every guava-containing cosmetic will produce the same result on human skin.

Guava’s vitamin C content is also relevant to skin biology because vitamin C participates in normal collagen synthesis. A finished topical formula still needs the right extract, concentration, delivery system and stability before any visible-skin benefit can be judged.

What guava should not be expected to do

Guava should not be presented as a treatment for acne, eczema or other skin conditions, nor should it be assumed to “boost collagen” simply because the plant contains vitamin C. For sensitive or reactive skin, the tolerability of the complete formula matters more than the reputation of a single botanical.

Where it fits in an AEMLIE ritual

Within AEMLIE, guava is best understood as a supporting botanical for antioxidant-rich, sensitive-skin-conscious formulation. The emphasis remains on barrier-aware skincare, well-constructed formulas and claims that stay proportionate to the available evidence.
